The visit provided students with a unique opportunity to engage with Chinese culture, education, and history, fostering global connections and personal growth.
The journey began on Saturday, March 22, 2025, as students travelled to London Heathrow before departing for China. Upon arrival in Chengdu, they were warmly welcomed and settled into their hotel, ready for an exciting week ahead.
A major highlight of the trip was a visit to the renowned Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre, where students observed giant pandas in their natural habitat and learned about conservation efforts. They also explored Chengdu’s historic Wide and Narrow Alley and visited the serene Wenshu Monastery, gaining insights into traditional Chinese architecture and culture.
Education played a central role in the trip, with students engaging in a three-day exchange program at partner schools. They participated in classes, experienced Chinese teaching methods, and shared their own knowledge and culture with their Chinese peers, creating meaningful international friendships.
For three days during the trip, pupils attended lessons at both primary, middle and secondary partner schools including:
Shuhua Branch of Chengdu Shishi United Middle School
Chengdu Xinjin Foreign Language Experimental School
Primary School Affiliated to No.3 Middle School of Sichuan Tianfu New Area
Jinjiang Primary School of Sichuan Tianfi New Area.
Here, pupils participated in a variety of classes and lessons, including Traditional Chinese Painting, Pottery, Textiles, Calligraphy, Ceramics, Rock Climbing and Martial Arts. The immersive hands-on experience allowed pupils not only to learn from their Chinese peers but also forge meaningful connections through cultural exchange.
Each school visit included a tour, a welcome ceremony hosted by the school principal, and the exchange of gifts, symbolising the bonds of friendship and understanding between the pupils.
Beyond the classroom, the students explored the rich heritage of Chengdu. They embarked on a scenic boat tour at Huang Long Xi Ancient Town and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the town centre. Their visit also included a trip to the Sichuan Provincial Museum, where they delved into the region’s fascinating history.
The trip concluded on March 29, as the group departed Chengdu for their return journey back to the UK, filled with incredible memories and a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.
Andrea Booth, Head Teacher from Handforth Grange Primary School, said: "This trip has been an incredible opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in a new culture, develop international friendships, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. The experiences they have had in Chengdu will stay with them for a lifetime."
This remarkable cultural exchange was a transformative experience, broadening the students’ perspectives and fostering an appreciation for global connections. Schools from across FFET express their gratitude to the hosts in Chengdu for their warm hospitality and the invaluable learning opportunities provided.
